ENISE experts warn that hackers can accelerate or brake a car

Can a cyber attack manipulate a car’s brakes? According to experts from ‘HackerCar’, who gave a presentation this Tuesday at the International Information Security Meeting (ENISE), the answer is yes.

A cyber attack could manipulate the trajectory of an autonomous car, accelerate against the driver’s wishes, or help a criminal leave a gas station without paying. “It’s not science fiction; artificial intelligence already exists in Mercedes or BMW that recommends plans while you drive. These systems prevent you from exceeding speed limits or going off the road, but they also have dangers and need fine-tuning,” warn ENISE experts about the hidden side of these advancements.

Javier García, Enrique Serrano, Javier Muñoz, Daniel Aranda, and Diego García are part of the ‘HackerCar’ company, which, along with journalists and hackers, seeks to make this complex language accessible to drivers. “Brands are investing a lot in cutting-edge technology in cars, but that means they must also invest in cybersecurity,” explained Enrique Serrano.
