Scientific advances in the field of genetic diagnosis now allow for techniques capable of analyzing the DNA of embryos before implantation through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This way, in cases where one member of the couple is a carrier of a disease, it can be prevented from being transmitted to the future child. It can also be applied in cases where a couple has a sick child who can be cured by a new genetically compatible sibling.
Despite its apparent benefits, there are many critics of preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Around these novel techniques, terms such as laboratory baby, savior sibling or designer motherhood have emerged.
Beyond theoretical knowledge or subjective assessments, are people sufficiently informed about the scope of preimplantation genetic diagnosis to be able to assess its advantages and disadvantages?
