The Madrid Science Park, together with its board of trustees and a representation of its associated entities, has signed the transparency agreement on the use of animals in scientific experimentation presented by the Confederation of Scientific Societies of Spain (COSCE), in collaboration with the European Association for Animal Research (EARA).
The proposal has been supported by 90 entities including research centers, universities, companies, hospitals, science parks, patient associations, and scientific societies from all over Spain.
The presented initiative is aligned with other similar agreements adopted in neighboring countries such as Germany or England and responds, according to the promoters, to the understanding that “research with animal models has led to a great advance in our scientific knowledge” and that its use is not arbitrary, but always justified and regulated.
For their part, the signatory institutions commit to fulfilling four basic commitments based on the principle of responsibility and transparency in the use of animals in scientific research:
1. Speak clearly about when, how, and why animals are used in research.
2. Provide adequate information to the media and the general public about the conditions under which research requiring the use of animal models is conducted and the results obtained from it.
3. Promote initiatives that generate greater knowledge and understanding in society about the use of animals in scientific research.
4. Report annually on the progress of the agreement and share experiences.
