The Genomics Unit hosts a European doctoral student

A student from Utrecht University (Netherlands) visits the Genomics Unit of the Madrid Science Park as part of the European doctoral program in which he participates. Additionally, during his stay in Madrid, he has also learned about the activity of the Microbiology laboratory at Ramón y Cajal Hospital.

Apostolos Liakopoulos studies the genetic characteristics of plasmids, small relatively autonomous genetic entities that some bacteria use to acquire advantageous properties and functions.

Therefore, it has been of great interest for him to receive training at the Park on the use of a genetic analysis platform associated with bacterial resistances known as ResCap (resistome capture). Among the genes analyzed through ResCap are many plasmid markers, which are important vehicles used by microorganisms to acquire antibiotic resistance and manage to spread in adverse circumstances.

It has been a pleasure to have collaborated in enriching his practical knowledge. Notions that will be helpful for him to continue with his research once his training period is completed.
