Startups in the scientific ecosystem

On the occasion of Startup Europe Week, the Madrid Science Park hosted the event aimed at innovative companies emerging from the scientific ecosystem . The meeting was divided into a panel of talks, where, accompanied by leading agents in the sector, discussions were held on early-stage financing, technology transfer, incubation and acceleration of scientific companies, and the peculiarities in business strategy that, by their very nature, these types of organizations require.

The words cooperation, collaboration, and networking were repeated in all interventions as cornerstones that ensure the progress of any innovative idea and its promoting team.

With special emphasis, the director of Impact Hub Madrid explained how they are working to transform society by building bridges that make technology transfer a reality. For this, they rely on the “Glocal” concept, a sum of Global and Localized.

As an example of an optimal environment for networking, the Transfiere Forum was presented, a leading European event in Technology Transfer that will hold its VI edition on February 15 and 16 in Malaga, and to which the Madrid Science Park, representing its hundred companies, will punctually attend.

Among all the proposals, the one offered by the Madrid Science Park, within the framework of the Enterprise Europe Network, aroused special interest. A catalog of support services for SMEs with an internationalization vocation that includes sector meetings, access to financing, business missions, or dynamization of technological offers/demands.

It was therefore evident that scientific-technological entrepreneurs have a wide range of possibilities and tools at their disposal to find technological partners, initiate a process of technology transfer, or internationalize their business. For this reason, experts recommended focusing on and evaluating all alternatives before advancing any new step in business strategy, applicable to any entrepreneur, but especially to an innovative SME in the Life Sciences sector.

The early-stage financing block was led by ENISA and BStartup Sabadell, who showed the public and private perspectives, and the collaboration between both.

Enisa encouraged attendees to apply for upcoming calls, showing examples of scientific-technological SMEs that have already been financed by ENISA. Among them, 7 of the most veteran companies of the Madrid Science Park have received a total of two million euros.

As a wake-up call to attendees, BStartup Sabadell reflected on the differences between investment and financing, their pros and cons when choosing the most convenient alternative. And how sometimes the formula involves both coexisting.

In short, an event that drew the roadmap for any young startup that is beginning its journey in the local and global market.
