A Week Dedicated to Massive Sequencing by Illumina

Share

Thanks to the close relationship between the Genomics Unit of the Madrid Science Park and the international firm Illumina, expert in genetic analysis, massive sequencing has been the protagonist for a week on the Park’s agenda.

In the format of a theoretical-practical course and scientific seminar, experts in the field have gathered to learn about the latest developments in massive sequencing:

Presentation of Innovations in NGS

The Madrid Science Park has hosted a new scientific seminar on some of the most recent advances in genomics.

Especially aimed at sequencing gene panels in the clinical field, the seminar has presented the latest developments in the entire sequencing workflow, from the design of the panels themselves to the most refined tools for the final analysis of results.

The session served to present a new sequencing equipment from Illumina, called MiniSeq, whose main advantage is obtaining sequencing results more quickly.

The Genomics unit of the Madrid Science Park, through its head Ricardo Ramos, has actively participated in the session by reviewing the capabilities of massive sequencing and presenting an overview of its activity throughout its 5 years of experience in NGS (Next Generation Sequencing).

Practical NGS Course: Detection of Mutations Based on the TruSightTumor-15 System

On the other hand, a 3-day theoretical-practical course has allowed a small group of seven participants to thoroughly understand a panel aimed at analyzing mutations in cancer-related genes and even use their own samples.

Students have been able to develop a complete NGS experiment, from initial sample preparation to sequencing and advanced analysis of results with the diagnosis of genetic variants.

The scientific equipment provided by Illumina and the control collection with known and quantified mutations provided by the Madrid Science Park have demonstrated the success of the enrichment process in recurrent mutations, as well as that of the entire sequencing workflow and the analysis itself.

The reception of the format, with the development of experiments in situ, and the general organization of the course, carried out jointly with Aula Científica, guarantees that new sessions of practical courses aimed at mutation panels and other topics of high interest such as metagenomics will be developed in the near future.
