Novepa Therapeutics is a deep-tech spin-off of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and 4Ammonium Biotech dedicated to developing new cardiovascular therapies based on next-generation bioactive lipids.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide (18 million deaths per year). Statins reduce the risk of cardiovascular events by 25%. However, despite this reduction, a significant residual risk remains.
Novepa’s main development is an innovative therapy focused on transforming the therapeutic potential of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), a clinically validated omega-3 fatty acid. To achieve this, they propose designing a new phospholipid molecule with greater affinity for cell membranes, improved distribution, and potentially greater clinical efficacy. Consequently, Novepa’s therapy is aimed at reducing residual cardiovascular risk in patients with ASCVD through the combination of LPC-EPA with statins. Current EPA-based therapies require high doses and have limitations in terms of bioavailability. In contrast, Novepa’s approach enables greater therapeutic efficiency and paves the way for more effective and accessible treatments.
